Attorney Heather L. Dorion is of counsel at Cognetti & Associates. Ms. Dorion received her Bachelor's Degree from the College of William and Mary in 1973, and was awarded her law degree from Marshall-Wythe School of Law at the College of William and Mary in 1976. The first ten years of Attorney Dorion's legal practice started with a general civil practice. She brought corporate pension plans into compliance with ERISA, represented profit and not-for-profit corporations, drafted wills and other estate planning documents, represented buyers and sellers of real estate, served as a title agent, and represented parties in litigation such as construction problems. As time went on and after her own divorce, family law cases became an increasing portion of her practice. In addition, she served as a Court Appointed Counsel for Dependent Children, served on the York County Panel of Arbitrators, and served in York County as a divorce master under the common law divorce proceedings. During that time, she was elected to serve York County Pennsylvania as Register of Wills and Clerk of the Orphans' Court for the term of 1980-1983. She chose not to pursue a second term to devote full attention to her law practice. However, she was happy that the end-of-term audit by the state inheritance tax bureau determined the approximately $24 million that the office collected during her term balanced within pennies. Attorney Dorion was very busy within the community during that time, as well. Ms. Dorion "retired" from the practice of law for personal pursuits and family purposes from 1987 to 1993.

Attorney Dorion's second chapter in the legal world started in 1993, when she took a basic family mediation course by trainers approved by the Academy of Family Mediators. In 1994, she resumed the practice of law and started mediation services as a sole practitioner, while taking an active role in the formation of Mediation Services for Conflict Resolution, Inc. in York and assisting Judge Penny Blackwell in the formation of the mandatory custody mediation program for York County. She also co-authored a local Court grant proposal to the State Justice Institute that awarded a grant to the York County custody mediation program in 1996. In addition to representing private clients, she also served as a Court Appointed Counsel for Dependent Children, Court Appointed Custody Mediator, and Court Appointed Counsel for the Elderly in Guardianship and Protection from Abuse cases, in York County, Pennsylvania. Then, Attorney Dorion was employed exclusively as a Divorce Master for York County, Pennsylvania for 15 years, until her retirement. After almost three years of retirement, Attorney Dorion has returned to employment focused entirely on family law.

Ms. Dorion served on the Board of Directors of the following organizations: Mediation Services for Conflict Resolution, Inc. - Founding President; Downtown Club of York; Chamber of Commerce of York, Pennsylvania; Penn Laurel Girl Scout Council. She is active in her church: singing in the choir and participating in the ladies' group projects.

Ms. Dorion is licensed to practice law in Pennsylvania as well as the United States Supreme Court and the U.S. Middle District Court of Pennsylvania. Although Ms. Dorion was born in the Philadelphia suburbs, she has lived in central Pennsylvania most of her life. In her free time, she enjoys spending quality time with her husband, family and friends, as well as reading, and is returning to her love of gardening and playing the piano.
